Amanda Selsky has always been drawn to making—whether it was sewing garments with beaded fringe as a child or crafting jewelry out of cardboard and sequins as a teenager. When she wasn’t making art, she was probably reading, or building some other imaginative world.
After receiving her BA in English from the University of Virginia in 2017, Amanda followed her love of stories into the classroom, earning her MA in Elementary Inclusive Education from Teachers College at Columbia University and later moving to the Colorado mountains to teach elementary school. Teaching provided Amanda with the opportunity to develop her visual storytelling muscle in collaboration with dedicated and inspiring educators, working together to make content accessible, relevant, and engaging for their entire learning community.
Amanda aims to challenge exclusionary practices through collective action, whether that’s through creating art from a place of joy and healing, designing in collaboration with mission-driven organizations, collaborating with students and families, upcycling fabrics into quilts and garments, or telling and illustrating stories that explore themes of shame, grief, and mental health.
Amanda is currently based in Baltimore where she finds inspiration daily as she completes her MA in Illustration from the Maryland Institute College of Art, set to graduate in May. She’d love to connect and collaborate - send her a message at amandaselsky@gmail.com or get in touch below.
